Key Issues

The upgrade of road systems to accommodate expected new developments in the coal mining industry. This involves primarily the Stillwater-Ikamatua Road. Finding the most appropriate transport solution for such coal to Port of Greymouth is the subject of a current investigation and both road and rail are considered. Any final solution will depend on longer term security of coal exports through the Port.

  • Appropriate, dedicated maintenance and renewal to ensure maximum longevity of roads.
  • Elimination of accident black spots.
  • Maximum use of Transfund subsidies.
  • A pro-active approach to future development.
  • A continuing strong emphasis on road safety, including the adoption of a road safety strategy which will incorporate safety management systems and management plans that will be reviewed and updated annually.
  • Dedicated, responsible bridge maintenance and renewal.
  • Retention of public ownership of the Road corridor.
