Be prepared

Get ready for an emergency.

 
You will need to have:

Emergency Survival Items

 

  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Radio with spare batteries
  • Wind and water proof clothing, sun hats and strong shoes
  • First aid kit and essential medicines
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Pet supplies
  • Emergency toilet, a shovel and toilet paper
  • Face and dust masks
  • Check batteries every three months

 

Food and water for 3 day or more

 

  • Non-perishable food (Canned or dried)
  • Food, formula and drinks for babies and small children
  • Water (at least three litres per person per day)
  • A primus or gas barbeque to cook on
  • A can opener
  • Stock enough for two weeks.  Check and replace food and water every 12 months

 

Get away Kits

 

Everyone in the house should have a getaway kit kept in an easily accessible place, containing:

  • Torch and radio with spare batteries
  • Hearing aids with spare batteries, glasses or mobility aids.
  • Emergency water and easy to carry food
  • Supplies of any special dietary items
  • First aid kit and essential medicines
  • Food for infants or young children
  • Change of clothing (wind/waterproof)
  • Tolietries
  • Blanket or sleeping bag
  • Face or dust mask
  • Pet supplies
  • Copies of Identification  (Passport, birth, marriage certificates, drivers licence)
  • Financial (insurance policies and mortgage)
  • Copies of precious photographs.

 

How to store water:

 

  • Wash bottles (not milk bottles) thoroughly in hot water. Fill with tap water till overflowing.
  • Add 5 drops of household bleach per litre, or half a teaspoon per 10 litres.
  • Store in a cool dark place and replace every 12 months.

 

If you have to evacuate:

 

  • Take your getaway kit
  • Turn off electricity, gas and water
  • Take your pets

 

Make sure that you have a household plan

 

  • Have you earthquake proofed you house?
  • Who will pick the kids up?
  • If you can’t get home where will you meet or leave a message?
  • Who is responsible for checking the emergency supplies?
