The harbour
Entrance is across a bar, between breakwaters to cargo wharves on the river and fish unloading wharves/fishing boat berthages in Erua Moana Lagoon.
LINZ Chart NZ 7142 “Greymouth Harbour and Approaches” explains entrance beacons. Maximum entrance draught is usually 4.8 metres at neap tides to 5.5 metres at spring tides, but varies between about 4.5 and 6 metres.

Pilotage
Pilotage is advised for vessels over 100 GRT if the master is not familiar with the Port. Pilotage may become compulsory in the future. Licensed pilots are available from Christchurch and Invercargill and can be requested through the Harbour Office.
Advisory services for entry and departure provided by Harbour Supervisor on VHF Channel 14 or Mobile 64 027 435 3424. Current depths at bar, river channel, lagoon and berths, sounding plans and swell forecasts available by fax. Vessels over 3m draught to notify Harbour Supervisor before entry.
Border control services
The Greymouth Port is licensed as a Customs Controlled Area for vessels and goods arriving in or departing from New Zealand. Customs services are available from Christchurch, phone + 64 3 358 0600.
Approved transitional facility pursuant to Biosecurity Act 1993. Quarantine garbage disposal facility available. Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry clearances services available from Christchurch, phone + 64 3 358 1855.
Health pratique clearance available from Community Public Health Ltd, Greymouth + 64 3 768 2681.
Maritime Security Act 2004 and ISPS Code security requirements will be applied to vessels (except barges over 500 GRT on international voyages).

Cargo handling
Open storage for bulk coal (one 20,000 tonne stockpile or two 8000 tonne stockpiles), aggregate and timber cargoes, and enclosed storage available.
Port serviced by road transport. Access to South Island rail system 1km from Port.

Fishing port and marine services
