Grey District Council recently consulted on whether sustainable harvesting of native trees on Council owned land should be allowed and was inundated with over 14,000 submissions. Council heard those submitters who wished to speak to their submission at an ordinary meeting of Council on 12 June 2017 and had planned to consider the matter fully at their meeting in July 2017.
However, the logistics of reading and summarising the huge volume of submissions with available staff resources amidst an already very busy work programme is proving a challenge and will take more time to complete. Therefore, the matter will go before Council in August 2017 together with a summary of all submissions received. Even though a large percentage of submissions received were submitted electronically and are therefore easily summarised, Council are still looking at over 50 pages of summarised submissions.
We assure our community, and the wider NZ public, that we are working hard on this matter and regret any inconvenience caused by this delay.
