Exercise Southern Katipo is New Zealand’s largest military exercise held every two years in varying parts of New Zealand. Exercise Southern Katipo 17 (SK17) will run from the first week of October until mid-November 2017 and is being held in the Marlborough, Kaikoura, Tasman, Nelson, Buller and Grey regions.
Residents and visitors can expect to see Defence Force personnel, from New Zealand and other participating countries, in and around Greymouth while the exercise is being held. From mid to late November it is expected large numbers of soldiers, armoured vehicles and aircrafts will be here. It is important to note that while the soldiers will be armed, they will be firing blank rounds.
People will have noticed more NZ Defence Force troops and vehicles around Greymouth around the beginning of November as the military exercise Southern Katipo reached action point. In the scenario the bad guys are in and around Greymouth and the good guys are coming in to restore peace.
The NZDF are holding an Open Day to say thank you to the community during Exercise Southern Katipo. This is a chance for you to get up close and personal with their people and equipment. They will have static displays and demonstrations.
