Morning everyone. River levels have continued to drop overnight and are no longer at alarm levels.

All local roads should now be open, however we do urge you to be careful in case of left over patches of surface flooding and take care as there is likely to be debris on the roads.

For information on the status of state highways, please refer to the NZTA website.

General information

On Friday 19 June 2015, there was widespread surface flooding, including the following areas:

  • Nelson Quay - Cobden
  • Runanga - Coal Creek flooded
  • Camerons
  • South side of Cobden Bridge
  • Kaiata

Road information

Media Release – West Coast Region Media Release Flooding Situation
19 June 2015, 4am

A north easterly frontal system has moved through the region causing significant rainfall from Haast through to Karamea. The system has moved through the Grey District and onto the Buller District. Hokitika has encountered significant surface flooding in the township resulting in the evacuation of some residents. Rainfall in coastal areas has been recorded at between 130-200mm in 24 hours.

Significant disruption to the roading network has occurred with many areas cut off by surface flooding including:

  • Greymouth to Hokitika
  • Greymouth to Stillwater
  • Greymouth to Westport

The Greymouth Flood Committee met at 0400 to discuss the flooding in Greymouth and potential flood levels. The Grey River has risen to 5.5m and is predicted to rise peak mid-morning around 1000. The Committee will meet again if the river reaches 6.1m, several actions have been put in place according to the flood action plan for the Grey River.
