Speed limit changes are being made in Moana to increase safety on our roads. The speed limit in the Moana township will lower to 30km/h.
Members of the community have been telling the Council that they’d like to reduce the speed limit around Moana township to increase safety, especially for children attending Lake Brunner School and other pedestrians in Moana.
Following a review of the speed limits and the road environment our traffic engineering staff agree that the benefits to safety justifies lowering the speed limit, so a Speed Management Plan was created for Moana, using Waka Kotahi's Speed Management Guide to ensure compliance with speed limit rules and the 'Road to Zero' strategy.
The change is also in line with work currently in progress across the district in relation to the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2022, which will require establishment of 30km/h speed limit outside certain types of schools.
Research and international best practice recommends a speed limit of 30 km/h as the safest speed for roads and streets used by many pedestrians, particularly children. At this speed, the likelihood of a pedestrian surviving a collision with a motor vehicle and avoiding serious injury is significantly higher. Research shows that the risk of a pedestrian being fatally injured doubles when the speed increases from 30 km/h to 40 km/h, and this risk doubles again when it goes from 40 km/h to 50 km/h.
The installation of the new speed limit signage will begin the week of Monday 20 November. The new speed limits will be effective once the installation works are completed. You can view the new signage locations on the map below but please note these are subject to change slightly based on community and engineer feedback.
Your support and cooperation in observing the new speed limit is appreciated to create a safe environment for everyone in our community.
