New Dog Registration Service Helps Lost Dogs Get Home Faster

Grey District Council is making it easier for lost dogs to be reunited with their owners by introducing a free text-based reunite service with this year’s dog registrations.

In partnership with Doggone, all registered dogs will receive a new lifetime registration tag linked to a simple text service designed to help lost or roaming dogs get home quickly and safely.

If a dog is found, anyone can text the registration tag number to 4133. For owners who opt in to the Doggone reunite service, the finder will immediately receive a secure link allowing them to make direct contact via the owner’s chosen phone number. For owners who choose to opt out of the service, the finder will be directed to contact Grey District Council.

Michael McEnaney, Regulatory Manager at Grey District Council, says the initiative provides added value for local dog owners.

“This new service offers peace of mind knowing that if a dog escapes or goes missing, it can be quickly reunited with its owner,” Michael says. “It could also help dogs avoid a stay at the local pound!

“To help celebrate the launch, everyone who registers their dog in July and signs up to Doggone will go in our annual draw to win a Deluxe Pooch Pamper Pack.”

As part of the initiative, dog owners will also be able to access the free Doggone app to manage their dog’s profile and update contact details if circumstances change, such as when a family member or pet sitter is caring for the dog, and receive important dog registration and animal welfare notifications from council.

Grey District Council says the initiative supports responsible dog ownership and provides a practical tool to help keep dogs and the community safe. The service is also expected to reduce staff callouts and associated vehicle and operational costs, allowing the programme to effectively pay for itself within existing animal control budgets.
