Library to close May 22; pop-up sessions announced
Seven library pop-up sessions will be held following the closure of the Greymouth Library this coming Friday, May 22, at 5pm.
The current library was built on part of the former Town Hall site – after it burned down in 1947 – and opened in 1957. The new library on Richmond Quay will open to the public on 3 July.
During the six-week closure, staff will be packing and moving everything apart from the books. A professional mover will handle the relocation of the 30,000-book collection, ensuring it is kept safe, sound, and dry.
During the transition, staff will also be commissioning new technology, training in new systems, and getting everything ready for the grand opening.
Library Supervisor Anthony Hunter said even though we can’t offer all our services while we’re moving, we really wanted to keep touch with the community and provide some essential services.
A series of pop-up sessions will be held at the Westland Recreation Centre, including Justices of the Peace services. Sign-ups, device advice, and support with digital library apps will also be available.
Items can be returned to the old library until 3 June via the ‘returns slot’ at the entry. After this date, please hold onto your books and return them once the new library opens on 3 July.
Mr Hunter said and don’t worry, “there will be no overdue fees as a result of the closure and loan periods will automatically be extended until we’ve re-opened”.
He also added that the whole library team is understandably nervous but really, really excited to welcome everyone to the new building and to resume our full set of services.
The pop-ups with JP services are on June 2, 9, 16; pop-ups without JP services are May 29, June 5, 12, and 19.
Books will not be available during the pop-ups, as the collection is being packed and prepared for relocation.
