Meet Fergus Boot, a seven-year-old reader who has taken out the top prize in our Book Run competition, awarded to the person who borrowed the most books between 1 May and 22 May.
While Fergus is our first golden ticket winner to be announced, there are still more chances for others to join him.
He clocked up an incredible 62 books in less than a month. He hasn’t got through all of them yet, he said, but reads three books a day, so it shouldn’t take too long. The Boot family are avid readers, always taking part in reading challenges and are regular borrowers.
When he visits the new library, Fergus is most looking forward to checking out the playground and enjoying a coke at the café. He’s still deciding who will join him for the special day, a big decision still under consideration.
Fergus is one of just five “golden ticket” winners who will get an exclusive first look at the new Greymouth Library on June 27.

The Voting Factory
Currently located at the Westland Recreation Centre, the Voting Factory invites the community to vote for the library space they are most excited to see. Simply choose a coloured slip, write your name and details, and place it into the jar for your chosen space. A winner will be drawn at random. Entries close 7 June.
Photography Competition
Show us “a backyard and a book” in the Grey District — a celebration of our beautiful surroundings and a love of reading. Entries close 7 June.
Poetry Competition
Students from public schools across the Grey District were invited to write poems about the new library. Each school selected three entries, which have now been submitted to a panel of local poets. This competition closed on 15 May and judging is currently underway.
