From our Mayor
The Government is proposing changes to the way our drinking water, stormwater and wastewater services are delivered to residents through a Three Waters Reform.
The Government has given councils until the end of September to provide feedback on the potential impacts of the proposed reform and how it can be improved. Over this feedback period, we are trying to:
- Comprehend the large amount of information that has been released by the government, the nature of the challenges facing the sector, the case for change and the proposed package of reform, including the recently announced support package.
- Understand how the proposal impacts our community.
- And, to identify local concerns and feedback.
The fundamental question our Council is considering: Will the reform proposal be beneficial for our community?
We all agree that quality drinking water and environmental outcomes are a good thing for the country. The Grey District Council has successfully achieved and continues to deliver these results for our community.
At the moment it’s not clear whether the proposed reforms are the best way to achieve this, and what the advantages are for our District.
Over the next few weeks, we will keep you informed via information sessions (webinars), our website and our Facebook page. Details of these are enclosed.
With the information we have to date, your councillors and I would prefer to collectively (with other Council’s) refrain from making a decision on the reform until we have an opportunity to understand the proposal in depth. We want to have a clear understanding of the impacting costs, how any change would affect our community, and allow other associated processes such as the local government reform to be finalised.
We, along with other Council’s have written to Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta to formally request a pause to the current three waters reform process.
This pause would allow us the opportunity to provide a comprehensive and informative consultation process with our community before we proceed to make a significant decision that will impact us all.
