Use of car lights when approaching the breakwaters

Further to reports of concern from skippers of fishing boats frequenting the Port of Greymouth about the lights of cars travelling to the breakwaters at night, we advise the following.

The car headlights can create confusion for the skippers, who are trying to use the port navigation lights to safely enter the Port. This is a serious safety issue and adds to the existing challenges for boats crossing the bar and entering the Port of Greymouth.

We would like to ask motorists travelling to the Blaketown or Cobden breakwaters at night to kindly dip their headlights and then switch them off once at the breakwaters. This simple action will allow the skippers to safely guide their boats into port using the correct navigation lights.

Thank you for your co-operation.
