What is the Summer Reading Challenge designed for?
The Summer Reading Challenge is designed to encourage children to continue reading during the holidays and maintain or improve their literacy skills in a fun way!
How does it work?
Children are invited to take part in 5 adventures, each of them celebrating a New Zealand adventurer.
To complete each adventure, they need to:
- A. Pick an adventurous reading: children pick a book based on the setting of each adventure, having the choice between two different topics.
- B. Collect reading points: the time spent reading equals points (20min=20points). The amount children need to read increases from Adventure 1 to Adventure 5 for each adventure.
- C. Experience the Adventure: those are simple tasks encouraging children to have fun and be creative!
Bonus: Library events!
As mentioned, children can participate in tailored Library events to learn more about our New Zealand Adventurers. They can even make the most of these events to collect Reading Points, earn special stickers and win cool prizes!
What if they cannot complete the entire Challenge?
They do not need to complete all the Adventures to participate! For each Adventure completed, they will receive a bracelet charm!!*
Also, if they are in the early stages of learning to read, someone else read can read to them to help them complete the Adventures.
*Subject to availability
When they are done, they can simply drop their entry form off at the Grey District Library or their school by Tuesday 10, February 2026.
