The Future of Local Government on the West Coast

The Government has announced proposed reforms to local government across New Zealand, aimed at simplifying council structures, reducing duplication, and improving how services and infrastructure are delivered to communities.

As part of this process, councils have been given a three-month opportunity to work together and put forward proposals for how local government could be reorganised in their regions. The Government has indicated that if councils do not develop proposals themselves, a national reform process may be introduced.

We know people will have questions about how any future changes could affect representation, services, decision-making, and local identity. Are there too many Councils on the West Coast?

The Government wants fewer, larger and more efficient councils across New Zealand.

Councils have been given a choice: develop a locally led proposal through the Head Start pathway or move into a central Government-led backstop process.

For the West Coast, this is our opportunity to help shape what happens next.
