Grey District Council (GDC) is pleased to announce that McLeans Pit Landfill is now a registered Tyrewise partner site, accepting end-of-life tyres free of charge when they meet the acceptance criteria.
Tyrewise is New Zealand’s first regulated product stewardship scheme for tyres, designed to reduce illegal dumping, stockpiles, and the number of tyres sent to landfill. The scheme is regulated under the Waste Minimisation (Tyres) Regulations 2023 and funded by a stewardship fee applied to all new tyre purchases from 1 March 2024.
Grey District residents can now drop off up to five tyres per visit at McLeans Pit Landfill at no cost, provided they meet the following conditions:
- Tyres are free of dirt, debris, and excess water
- No commercial loads are accepted
- Tyres must not be on rims
- Only Car, 4WD, and Truck tyres accepted
This new service supports GDC’s ongoing commitment to waste reduction and responsible resource recovery in our community.
