The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) Grey District took home the Rising Star Award at the organisation’s first annual national awards for its role in helping a young job seeker achieve his goal of becoming a security guard.
MTFJ is a nationwide network of New Zealand mayors and co-ordinators working alongside the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), with a shared vision of ensuring all young people aged 16–24 are engaged in employment, education or training within their communities.
With support from MTFJ, Greymouth man Riko Ellison achieved his goal of becoming a security guard.
Together, the team worked towards his goal, supporting him through driving lessons, gaining his learner and restricted licences, completing a defensive driving course, and studying towards his Certificate of Approval (COA).
“Riko put in a huge effort, meeting every milestone along the way, and it’s been great to see him achieve his goal and secure employment with First Security,” MTFJ facilitator Megan Prendergast said.
Mayor Tania Gibson said that through the programme, she had watched young people go into employment and flourish.
“It’s been wonderful watching your journey,” she told Riko.
MTFJ Grey District was also recognised in the Top 10 Performance Award category.
