Mayor for a Day contest launched

Year 7 and 8 students across the Grey District have the chance to become Mayor for a Day.

The Grey District Council today announced the new competition.

The winner will spend a day with Mayor Tania Gibson in early October.

They will visit the new Greymouth Library and Westland Recreation Centre, judge a competition, and experience a day in leadership.

A pizza party will also be held for the winner's class.

Mayor Tania Gibson said young people have an important role to play in shaping the future of the district.

"I’m excited to give one young person the opportunity to see first-hand how local government works and the role leadership plays in our community.

“Young people bring fresh ideas, energy and perspective, and I’m looking forward to hearing what matters most to them and how they would make a difference if they were Mayor for a Day."

Students can enter online by answering two questions: What do you love most about the Grey District? and If you were Mayor for a day, what would you do?

Entries close at 5pm on Friday, 10 September 2026, and the winner will be selected by 22 September 2026.
