The Grey District Council Responsible Freedom Camping Bylaw 2020 outlines the requirements associated with freedom camping in the Grey District. If you do not abide by these rules, Council staff or authorised contractors can fine you $200. In addition, you may get other fines associated with littering or leaving waste.
We encourage all visitors to our region to be familiar with the provisions of our Freedom Camping Bylaw so that their stay in our District is enjoyable and infringement free.

Payment of fines
If you have a Freedom Camping Infringement Fine to pay, you can do this via a variety of different methods, i.e.:
- Cash, eftpos or credit card at Council offices, 105 Tainui Street.
- You can also pay by internet banking or online credit card payment.
When paying online, please ensure you use the correct reference details required so your payment can be receipted against your fine:
- Reference - your Notice Number
- Particulars - Freedom
- Council's bank account details: Grey District Council, Westpac, Account Number 03-0846-0076500-02
